Red Yeast Rice was mentioned in the ancient Chinese medical text¸ Ben Cao Gan Mu¸ (written during the Ming Dynasty)¸ as a natural substance useful for helping the cardiovascular system and the digestive tract. Additional Information: Red Yeast Rice is the product of fermentation of non-glutinous rice with various strains of the yeast Monascus purpureus (Went). Much scientific research has been done on this substance. One constituent of Red Yeast Rice¸ Monacolin K¸ has been shown to inhibit the action of liver enzymes¸ responsible for manufacturing cholesterol in the body. Monacolin K is the same substance that is found in several cholesterol lowering pharmaceutical medications¸ although the amount in Red Yeast Rice (about 2% in 5mg) is much lower than the amount found in pharmaceutical medications (20-40mg per capsule). Since Red Yeast Rice is a natural product¸ it contains other plant-based compounds¸ such as sterols and fiber¸ which may also play a role in promoting health.
